Marine Electronic Development training program

The Marine Electronic Development (MELDEV) training program is a national training and development program. It’s designed to recruit electronics technologists and train them for work with the Canadian Coast Guard.

This 3-year program takes place at Marine Communications and Traffic Services centres and the Canadian Coast Guard College. It combines hands-on and theoretical learning.

Upon successful completion of the program you’ll immediately hold a full-time position with the Canadian Coast Guard.

Training

Through your work in the program, you’ll learn about:

• maintenance and repair of:
  • radio communication systems
  • electronic navigation equipment
  • computer systems and networks, including:
    • gyrocompasses
    • ultrasonic depth finders
    • ship and harbour radars
    • satellite communicators
    • PBX telephone exchanges
    • satellite positioning equipment
    • communication control systems
    • MF-HF-VHF-UHF radio telecommunications equipment
• inspection of radio stations on board commercial and government vessels

Our team provides essential technological support services that ensure safe and effective marine transportation and environmental protection. We’re based in several service centres located throughout Canada, such as:

• Gander NL
• Escoumins QC
• Sarnia ON
• Hay River NT
• Victoria BC

Most electronics technologists work for the Canadian Coast Guard's Integrated Technical Services (ITS) Directorate. There, you’ll provide technical support to:

• aids to navigation
• Marine Communications and Traffic Services
• a diverse and multi-purpose fleet consisting of:
  • icebreakers
  • hovercrafts
  • buoy tenders
  • scientific research vessels
  • search and rescue vessels
  • Canadian Hydrographic Service vessels

Some technologists go on to work for the Canadian Coast Guard College as managers and instructors.
